Nascar with some Malmsteen?!? Lol, that's a first
i thought that was a superbird at first...i was about to hunt him down a punch him in the head for crashing my dream car...
@stormrider62033 Safety nets come out after the death of Joe Weatherly at Riverside in 1964, Richard did design a improved safety net after this.
This is pretty sweet. Richard Petty has his own Cameo Star and now you can send the King to your friends on Facebook!
@jws381 Well... Ironically, breaking the concrete wall safe is life.
My Gawd he broke the wall!
Wow, that's one of the hardest "tags" (more like death blow) to a concrete wall I've ever seen. The king cheated death on that one for sure.
ABC had just started live coverage of this race...but they were running a taped clip when Petty wrecked and only caught the VERY tail end of the incident. Ned Jarrett was in the booth with Ji McKay at eh time and Ned assures me that Jim was nearly scared to death.
Yep, i got the NASCAR CRONICLE book and before 70 you don't see nets. Compared to today the cars back then were death traps.
the kings head hit the pavement and messed up his shoulder, after that they made it manditory to use the petty net
LOL, saying he "Tagged" the wall is like comparing a freshely severed arm to a "Mild flesh wound." But seriously, he massacred the damn wall!
"In the 1970 Rebel 400,
Richard Petty tags the inside wall
in his Plymouth Roadrunner..." TAGS?? WTF!? that was WAAAAAAAAAY more than "tag" that was more like "destroy"!
these cars were built like bricks. there was no such thing as crumple zones back then.
this is the crash that got the safty nets started infact Petty himself designed it
and yet im not 15? stupid.
It's not true.
i'm not sure about this but i heard that he lost part of or all of his hand in this crash. is this true or not?
Your 15...Yet you were alive to watch this race in 1970.
Nice try.
OMG this car has really NO crumple zone.
this is why the nets are there now, petty left side is hanging outside the car as its flipping
amzing that he didnt break his neck withou t the head strap reinforcement how many
gs did he take on the TAG?
that was my first race i went to. that was a really bad wreck..
He "TAGS the inside wall"?!
I'd say the weak wall dicipated a lot of the energy in the crash, sort of like what the safer barier does.
It's a miracle he survived. He broke the concrete wall for crying out loud.
